Curious about the world? – Apply now!

There are many arguments for a stay abroad during your studies – getting to know other countries and cultures and thus broadening your own horizons or learning and using languages. A stay abroad allows you to experience your field of study from a new perspective, make international contacts and acquire intercultural skills. Coping with everyday life and studying in another country is exciting and requires courage. You can certainly think of even more reasons to pack your bags. And above all, of course: when, if not now?

We have compiled information for you about studying abroad. If you have any further questions, please contact our international coordinator at Auslandskoordinatorin

Where can I find information about a stay abroad?

"The important thing in a semester abroad is to be really open and try out all the possibilities that are offered to you. At the end of a longer stay, the great friendships, the excursions and the culture remain in your memory." Study abroad in Seoul, Korea

What exchange opportunities are there? You can use a search mask MoveOn to look for the partner universities of TU Darmstadt for which you can apply. If you select the respective universities, you will find further information as well as field reports. We also provide an overview of the universities with which the Department of Humanities cooperates cooperations. (opens in new tab)

Is it possible to apply for places in other departments? Yes and no. The cooperation agreements with the partner universities are concluded for places within the respective department or degree programme. It therefore only makes sense to apply for places in another department if this is justified by the subject. When applying for places in other departments, it is advisable to apply as early as possible, as we will contact the departments concerned and they will then take them into account as far as possible when allocating places.

The following is an example of a subject-based application in another subject area: As a Cognitive Science student, you are applying for a place in Computer Science – your degree programme has a strong subject-related connection to Computer Science and you want to take courses from this area during your semester abroad. Applicants from Computer Science will be given preference in the allocation of places. You can get advice in advance from the International Coordinator of the Department of Computer Science.

For students of teacher training programmes, an application can be made via the basic sciences and also via your professional teaching subjects.

In addition to applying for a semester abroad via Erasmus+, student teachers can also complete their practical phases abroad. You can find information on the website of the ZfL Praxisphasen International

How do I apply?

Your application includes the online application form, a CV, a current transcript of records and a letter of motivation with reference to the desired universities as well as the relevant language certificates. For Master's students: Your Bachelor's degree certificate (if already available) and a transcript of records with the academic achievements of the Bachelor's and Master's degree are also part of the application. Language certificates

Find out in good time which language certificates are required, because your school leaving certificate is not sufficient as proof of language skills – even if the required language level is noted there. Especially for stays outside Europe, up-to-date language certificates are very often required as a prerequisite for acceptance of the application. All language certificates must be attached to the documents at the latest after nomination for an exchange place when applying to the partner university.

Irrespective of this, we recommend that you take a language course in the language of the country for at least two semesters before starting your studies abroad. Find out about language courses and exams at the Language Ressource Center in good time. As a so-called “outgoer”, preference will be given to Outgoing Students when registering for courses.

The first round application period for all exchange programmes (with the exception of the Hessen programmes) of an academic year is 1 November to 30 November of the previous year. For example, the application deadline for the winter semester 2024/25 or the summer semester 2025 is 30 November 2023.

Other application deadlines apply for the programmes of the State of Hesse (Hesse-Massachusets, Hesse-Wisconsin and Hesse-Queensland) Programmes of the State of Hesse

There is a second application round for the country area Europe including Switzerland and Russia, in which the places not yet filled in the first application round are allocated for the summer semester of the following academic year. Within the framework of the exchange programmes of the Federal State of Hesse, Bachelor's and Master's students can study for one semester at partner universities in the US states of Massachusetts and Wisconsin and in Queensland, Australia.

Applications for the Hessen-Queensland Programme are open from May until the application deadline end of May/ beginning of June. Applications can be submitted via the International Relations and Mobility Office. Do you have any questions? Our colleagues will be happy to advise you – send an email to or attend the online consultations.

Please also note that the application deadline for the Hessen programmes Hessen-Massachusetts and Hessen-Wisconsin is November 15th. Further information can be found on the information page for the Hessen-Massachusetts Programme and the Hessen-Wisconsin Programme.

Selection and nomination

After the application deadline, the department decides based on the applications received which applicants will be nominated for a stay abroad at one of our partner universities. Our goal is to make a stay abroad possible for as many students as possible – a little luck is also involved: Your chances of success in obtaining your desired place depend on the number of applications and for which places your fellow students have applied.

Our tip: As some partner universities are very popular, your chances of getting a place increase if you state more than one wish. We always try to make your first or second wish possible first, regardless of the number of wishes mentioned.

What are the criteria for selection for a semester abroad? The decisive factor is the overall picture of your application – the following aspects are taken into account:

• Your personal profile and motivation

• Your previous course of study and the subject-related integration of the planned stay abroad into your degree programme

• Proven language skills

• Sone universities require a minimum GPA.

As soon as we have made a selection, we will send the proposal list to the International Relations and Mobility Office for further processing. If you are not accepted for a place, we will inform you as soon as possible. If you have been selected for a stay abroad, you will receive an email to your TU email address and will be asked to accept the place (declaration of acceptance).

Only with the acceptance are you designated for the confirmed place. This is followed by the nomination and then your direct application to the partner university. All language certificates must also be submitted by this time at the latest.
